The date was May 15th, 1948, and I was twelve years old. I was getting ready to leave for school, but my mother came to me and asked me to join her in the bedroom. I could tell by her demeanor that something was up. She began to talk excitedly about an event that happened the previous day at the United Nations. My mother explained that for centuries Christians have been waiting for the fruition of a biblical prophecy that foretold the Jews' return to the Promised Land. She then told me with overflowing joy that this had indeed just happened, and Israel was a nation once again after nearly 1900 years. That memory is still so vivid in my mind even though it happened eight decades ago.
Why is this story important? And why should Christians and America care about this ancient land and its descendants?
