Divorce is terribly painful for a couple, but it can also haunt the children caught in the middle for a lifetime. The author of Helping Children Survive Divorce, Dr. Arch Hart was himself traumatized at the age of twelve when his parents divorced. Now as a psychologist, he first advises parents to be honest with their kids about why they’re divorcing. Second, parents should seek healing quickly since it’s difficult to give a child first aid when you, yourself, are bleeding. Third, invite your children to talk about their emotions. Dr. Hart encourages parents to maintain as much normalcy as possible, such as keeping consistent home routines.
