FOUR CANTOS ON WONDER by Karen An-hwei Lee
FIRST CANTO: The glory of God’s beautiful design, Psalm 40:5
O LORD my God, you have performed
many wonders for us. Your plans for us
are too numerous to list.
You have no equal. If I tried to recite
all your wonderful deeds,
I would never come to the end of them.
Your design is a beautiful song
with the brightness of silk
woven on a heavenly loom,
flowing with autumnal fire
and snow outside a chapel,
auburn and silver, our wonder
at the Son of God suffering,
who overcomes the world,
flaming blossom of salvation.
SECOND CANTO: The illumination of beloved statutes, Psalm 119:129-130
Your laws are wonderful.
No wonder I obey them!
The teaching of your word
gives light,
so even the simple
can understand.
Let us spread your love and light
to the far ends of the earth, the lamp
of your word yielding warmth,
reconciling all nations to you,
restoring our broken and wounded hearts
through the Holy Spirit –
may your beloved laws and statutes
glorify your wonderful nature,
your justice tempered with mercy.
THIRD CANTO: The field of radiant awe, Acts 4 : 30
Stretch out your hand
with healing power;
may miraculous
signs and wonders
be done through the name
of your holy servant Jesus.
May the hem of your cloak
and the apostle’s kerchief
mend all flesh in your name –
flushed with new life
in your field of radiant awe,
blessed as water to wine,
men healed of blindness,
fishermen walking on the sea,
sleeping girls wakened to life.
FOURTH CANTO: Eternity under the olives, Hebrews 2:4
And God confirmed the message
by giving signs and wonders
and various miracles
and gifts of the Holy Spirit.
In the soft milk light
of dawn, the little children
run to see our Messiah
strolling on the side of a hill
under the olive trees –
soon rose-colored on a cross
taking on the sins of the world,
the bread of life flayed, torn,
buried, then rising to glory. Of all
the signs and wonders, your gift
of salvation is most miraculous.
