It's very tempting to try to view myself as if I am truly good. If you read the Bible in context you'll see how much of it is showing mankind how serious our sin is, while we stand around with goofy smiles, thinking that we're not that bad. We can think that it's going to harm our psychology to see ourselves as truly sinful but it seems to me that a truly healthy mindset doesn't self-deceive. When we do finally admit that we are deeply in need of forgiveness we are humbled and ready to trust in Jesus to provide all the grace that's needed to wipe away all our sin. God's grace will fix our guilt, our denial will only make the problem worse.
