We meet Reverend Brandon Gilmore, Pastor of Nimmo United Methodist Church in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Reverend Gilmore tells us that he is speaking from the sanctuary built in 1791 and excited to be a part of a church that has rich traditions and history but is also innovative. Apart of this innovation is the Field to Fork Community Dinners. Melody Jeffery, Community Garden Coordinator noticed that the church’s community garden had a lot of produce which was given out to the community. She wanted to serve church members and also her neighbors with the surplus of seasonal produce. Field to Fork dinners are something that came to mind. Sarah Gordon, a clinical dietician, does not attend the church, but found the community garden by searching online. Melody asked Sarah to help at the dinners and also speak about healthy eating and nutrition at each meal. Sarah includes healthy ingredients that some people may recognize, but not know how to use in their own kitchens like chia or quinoa. Recipes are available for attendees, says Melody, “we are giving them more than just a meal, we are helping them eat better”. The Field to Fork dinners work on another level too, it creates community. Melody tells viewers of a gentleman that stopped by the garden looking for community. He now volunteers in the garden and attends the Field to Fork Dinners. The church finds that the event gathers attendees that are church members, but also a lot that are from the community and not affiliated with the church. This is a real way to minister to the community, says Reverend Gilmore. The hope is that relationships can be built and attendees will see the Christ in us, says Reverend Gilmore.
