Look at it this way. If you are going to stand before God and have to do so on the merits of your own goodness and works, you're doomed. He is perfect holiness. You are not. He is morally perfect in thought and action. You.... you're like me.
The only way we will make it is if Jesus stands there and presents us to God through the merit of HIS own goodness and works. We do not give our righteous deeds to God and say, "see, I've done all I can, judge me as worth of eternal life and forgiveness for all my sins." None of us has truly done all they can anyhow. In fact, we've done a whole lot we shouldn't have. Nor can we look into the holiness of God and pretend that our good deeds are some sort of comparison, or anything that remotely measures up to that holiness. When you realize how much Jesus has done for you, that He not only forgives you but gives you the righteousness of Christ, that He now only shows you the way to live holy but lived that perfectly holy way of life on your behalf, that He forever secures your salvation through His own goodness, not yours. When you realize this, it will change you.
