The ‘Blitzkrieg’ or ‘lightning strike’ bombing of London started at the beginning of September 1940 and by the November, Londoners had suffered 57 consecutive nights of German air raids.
80 years ago this Christmas, on the night of 29th to 30th of December, the longest continuous air raid hit London, as tens of thousands of bombs rained down.
As the planes flew along the moon-lit river Thames, they aimed directly at targets in the docks and the financial heart of the City, right next to St Paul’s Cathedral.
