Why Character is More Important Than Values
The opposite of extended adolescence, “peter pan syndrome,” never growing up, is not going out and getting a job and doing hard work for the rest of your life. The opposite of adolescence is virtue. It is beyond just believing the right things. Virtue is intertwining our beliefs with our behaviors and the ways that we interact with one another.
This is something that has been lost in Christian education. It is so focused on instilling values into kids that it overlooks instilling character and virtue into kids. This can lead to a disconnect between beliefs and actions. C.S. Lewis writes about this very problem, lamenting the fact that children aren’t being taught to make significant moral decisions. Even the great new testament writers like John, Paul, and Peter who outlined what it means to actually live in Christ, talked about virtue and the formation of character. This is something we need to get back.
