Why the Bible Is Authoritative
We cannot justify our faith by saying “because the Bible says so.” We must present a case for our children that God’s word is authoritative in their lives.
First, we must present a case that God exists in the first place. There are many powerful arguments for this: the cosmological argument, the fine tuning of the universe, intelligent design, the beginning of the universe points to a beginner, etc.
Once we have established that an intelligent, loving creator exists, we can foster the expectation that he may want to communicate with us. From this notion, we present a case that the Bible is the authoritative word of God. There are three steps here.
The transmission of the Biblical text
How do I know that what I am reading today is the same as what the writers of the Bible wrote 2000 year ago? We have a strong case for biblical transmission.
Is what the writers of the Bible wrote accurate?
We show how the Bible is historically accurate.
Is this the divinely inspired word of God?
We show the fingerprints of God on this book. We show the fulfillment of prophecies. We show the consistent message from 40 different authors over 1500 years
All these arguments prove that this is the word of God and the authoritative voice in our lives.
