Rachel and Jeremiah, having been missionaries in Costa Rica as newlyweds, moved to Virginia Beach, VA a couple of years ago. Rachel is a stay-at-home mother of 2 and Jeremiah works a 9-5 job, but the couple decided that they wanted to do more to help the homeless individuals they saw in Virginia Beach. They tell us that the name 99 for the 1 comes from Luke 15. A Shepherd has a flock of sheep, but leaves the flock to save the one. This is how ’99 for the 1’ feels about the homeless, lost members of society. Rachel tells us that they have a truck full of clothes, food, blankets, backpacks and other items that they allow homeless individuals to shop through at no cost. Jeremiah tells viewers that they reach out to homeless at shelters and those that are camping in the woods. ’99 for the 1’ offers showers for those that do not have access to a regular shower. The truck will pull up at the side of the road and set up a generator and provide a hot shower for anyone. Meeting homeless people through ‘99 for the 1’ helps Jeremiah see that not all homeless are what you would think. Everyone they meet enjoy receiving the items, take showers and have someone that looks for them each week. Jeremiah and Rachel say that meeting a physical need like giving out shoes and providing showers, helps communicate to the “forgotten” homeless that not everyone is against them and not everyone looks down on them. “People are people”, says Jeremiah, “we are all children of God”.
